These carbon fiber-reinforced hood and roof assemblies were produced in
a new rapid-curing out-of-autoclave process and robotic finishing, helping make
carbon composites fast enough for production volumes of 30-50K without
sacrificing the high-performance/low-weight properties achieved with
conventional autoclave curing. The new roof is approximately 7 lb lighter
than the previous SMC version, helping lower the vehicle's center of gravity
for better power/weight ratios and easier removal/stowage by consumers. Panel
gap consistency was improved 30%. Either painted body color or body color+
clear-coat/exposed weave finishes are available. Part costs/unit area were
reduced roughly 40% vs. the previous model.
