Electronic components in this illuminated scuff plate are encapsulated
in PC resin to protect them from damage due to exposure to electrostatic
dissipation, mechanical shock, and other environmental conditions. This
insert-molding method eliminates conventional conformal coatings or separate
housing assemblies, improves reliability vs. conventional light-engine design,
and also simplifies electrostatic discharge testing. Reduced package height
eliminated the need to form depressions in the rocker panel or make changes to
the door's sheet metal to accommodate the illuminated scuff plate.
