In this injection-molded application, the intercooler ― used to reduce
temperature of air coming from the compressor ― is integrated into the intake
manifold. Removal of the low-temperature charge air-cooler duct and reducing
the length of the high-temperature charge air-cooler duct makes the engine
respond quicker during acceleration.
Owing to the compact design of the component, packaging space in the
engine bay is increased, leaving more room for pedestrian protection. The result is a 25% weight, 30% direct-cost,
and 50% indirect-cost savings. Thanks to better combustion and no further air
delay, engine NOx and CO2
emissions are also reduced.
