In this injection-molded side-sill molding application, conventional nanoclay-filled
TPO or conventional talc-filled TPO are replaced by a new reinforcement
combination that uses whisker-type magnesium sulfate plus ultrafine talc. The resulting part has higher modulus,
exhibits greater dimensional stability, and costs 15% less vs. conventional nanoclay-filled
TPO. It also provides better multiaxial impact
strength and 1 kg/vehicle weight reduction vs. conventional talc-filled TPO. No
special tooling is required and the material is directly compounded, saving the
cost of custom masterbatch products. Such applications represent small but positive contributions
to reduction in vehicle fuel consumptions and emissions.
